100 Days – Days 30-35
Day 30: 5/29/10
i added a more “extreme” squash and stretch to this bounce. i think he looks really energetic now…
Day 31: 5/30/10
i’m having a lot of fun playing with these silly octo children. i’m pleased with this loop, it’s simple, but i don’t need him to do much more than that
Day 32: 5/31/10
i’m making another falling octo child, he’s gonna spin all the way around when he does…i don’t know if i have the tentecles right i’ll have to test him first.
Day 33-34: 6/01/10-6/02/10
i’ve been trying to plan out a reel, so i’ve been trying to think up of characters and how they might move. i was hoping dumping out sketches like this would help get my brain moving on reel ideas, but i don’t know that it has. what do i make? a collage? or a story? hmm…
Day 35: 6/03/10
i only managed two more frames in this rotation. i made several attempts – what was i thinking trying to rotate an octopus??
Shelties in Outer Spaaaaaaaace
a long time ago i had a dream i was in an arcade, and i was obsessed with playing this shooter game involving Shelties in Outer Space! they drink whiskey to get gun power ups, use jet packs to move around the screen, and eat poptarts for health. i’ve been trying to draw them a ton, in different styles to see which i like the best.
the top pair were the first and they have no personalities, the middle pair are more cartoony so obviously i like them best, and the bottom pair are colored like actual shelties. i will probably combine the bottom and the middle to see what i get. the middle pair look like they’re from opposing teams, but i was just trying to pick a logo/title. i like the “Shetland Spacedogs” logo, but i like the title “Shelties in Outer Space” much better.
in any case, not a bad idea for when i get into action scripting…also, i miss poptarts! i haven’t had one in 4 years.
100 Days – Days 27-29
Day 27: 5/26/10
squishy octo kid first pass
Day 28: 5/27/10
smooshin’ face. this one’s my favorite, i want to push it a little further still
Day 29: 5/28/10
the third octo child – i wanted to make sure all the actions would overlap more and not all move at once, but i separated them too much and it looks very mechanical and stiff. i’ll make him more fluid this weekend!
Commissioning Raver J
commission i did for the character, Raver J. i found the glittery bokeh texture from Regular Jane on deviantART. i can’t get enough of light that is out of focus…
100 Days – Days 19 – 26
here’s another mega post! i’ll try to do three at a time again, but it almost takes as long to post all of this as it does to animate…
Days 19-20: 5/18/10 – 5/19/10
first full test.
Day 21: 5/20/10
i added a bunch of inbetweens on the landing, i was afraid it looked like he hurt his knees when he landed. but i think i like the first test better.
Day 22: 5/21/10
added a weird curve to make him less stiff, but now he looks too floaty. i don’t want him to be a flour sack, so i’m scrapping this.
Day 23: 5/22/10
some more sea monster sketches. i loved all these head, but the one on the bottom is my favorite. i’m pleased with both of these, and i will somehow include them both…in…SOMEthing…
Day 24: 5/23/10
so i’m on a sea kick, obviously, and i’m looking for things to fill out a sea scene. so here are some octopuses/octopi. i traced the big one over and over to figure out how i want the legs. i love the babies i’m trying to make them super squishy. super squishy is the goal.
Day 25: 5/24/10
brainstorming some ocotpus scenes. now i must draw an axolotl – they’re so cute!
Day 26: 5/25/10
i drew the octopus children in Flash and colored them in Photoshop. i used the brush instead of the pen, so i’m going to try to brush all their squishy animations instead of penning them so i can better learn how to draw in Flash.
100 Days – Days 14 – 18
Day 14: 5/13/10
all i had time to do was vector my cricket in Flash.
Day 15: 5/14/10
my second pencil test – i tried playing with squash and stretch some. it’s hard to tell what to do straight ahead like this, so i think i will really nail my timing down in Flash.
Day 16: 5/15/10
i’m trying to think of my reel now, and i want to collage everything together. in this will be a lumberjack chopping animation, as well as a multi-plane background that i would like to loop as we exit the scene. it should be a lot of side scrolling fun! i really want to learn how to draw in Flash a little better before i begin this segment.
Day 17: 5/16/10
still thinking of my reel, i want to loop a sea monster in and out of the water. i think it would be a fun one to do. i have some action ideas in the top sketch, i want a lot of surf bubbles, or things like crabs and fish getting knocked out of the way. the bottom sketch are some head concepts, i’m still deciding how i want him to look. (i don’t usually show my super messy thought process, but there it is!)
Day 18: 5/17/10
back to the cricket!
100 Days – Days 10 – 13
i realize my blog is turning into one of those annoying early 90’s websites that are full of animated gifs, so i’m going to make a point of posting more sketches in between my animation posts. get it? anwyays, here’s the last 4 days:
Day 10: 5/09/10
tried some highs and lows, I think I put them in the wrong place. bouncy is nice, but not that nice. i definitely need to move on to something else this week, and come back. my brain needs a running hero break.
Day 11: 5/10/10
i drew this cricket forever ago, and i always wanted to make him hop. so i’m testing out a hop! needs many more frames.
Day 12: 5/11/10
seriously though, let’s get these bloody arms working! it has a flat paper look when he moves his shoulder down from the highest point, but i don’t think that bothers me.
Day 13: 5/12/10
did the other arm, and added a less drastic bounce. i’m done for now! it needs maybe a little more smoothing, and i didn’t finish all my shading. but i’d like to get some opinions before i continue. on to the next.
100 Days – Days 7-9
Day 7: 5/06/10
finished the legs – i love how noodly they turned out! of course it makes me hate the arms even more and i realize how stiff they are. i didn’t want to continue them the way they were going, so i will wait until i move the body to redo the arms – which is next!
Day 8: 5/07/10
did a new thumbnail test for the arms. i can’t tell if it looks like he’s running, dancing, or passing a bucket of water to put out a fire. i like the pops and wiggly stretches, so i think i’m going to have to put some key poses on top of the legs and see how it reads.
can’t tell if i pushed the loose too far, i tried a fake overlap to see if it would help, but in the end i don’t think it will work. i might have to sit on this for a bit and work on something else. at least until i either study some more or get help from one of my talented peers. probably both.
